Herbs can provide numerous benefits to chickens, promoting health, well-being, and pest control. Besides oregano, many other herbs are beneficial to chickens such as basil, parsley, mints, cilantro, lavender, and many others.
I planted oregano mainly to keep mosquitos and flies away, and it is a common herbal medicine for children who suffer from respiratory disease. Little did I know that it also offers significant health benefits to my birds, making it a valuable addition to their diet. Oregano help boosts chicken’s immune system. I either blend them and add to their drinking water or mix it with their feed. This plant is a natural antibiotic. It contains carvacrol and thymol – compounds that exhibit strong antibacterial and antiviral effects, aiding in the prevention and treatment of common poultry diseases such as coccidiosis and respiratory infection. I also gave an oregano concoction to my duckling, who suffered from wry neck. Riley is now a happy 2-month-old duck. It also helps in the digestive health of the chickens by promoting a balance gut microbiome, enhancing nutrient absorption and overall growth.
As I said, I planted oregano to keep mosquitoes and flies at bay plus it also helps maintain hygienic coop environment due to its pest repellent qualities, reducing the risk of infestation.
Furthermore, after I incorporate oregano to my chicken’s diet, I also notice improvement to egg quality. The herbs antioxidant properties contribute to healthier, more vibrant yolks. Of course, my chicken was free-range, and I even let them out into the fields once or twice a week, depending upon weather condition. When they are happy and healthy, I get better eggs.
